Triplet Updates

I saw the Hinsdale maternal fetal specialist yesterday and my OB today. Everything is well. I had a second ultrasound yesterday. I made him double and triple check that there were ONLY three! All three babies had strong heartbeats (167, 167, 171) and their measurements were 7w, 3d; 7w, 5d; and 7w, 6d. The were about a half an inch long! The doctor said they all had their own placentas which has the best outcome and least risk. He thought they were fraternal, but if the zygote split early (days 1-3) then two or more could be identical. It is extremely rare for identical triplets. Three fraternal triplets are the most common. Once the babies are born, if they look identical they can test the placenta to see if two or more of them are identical. They didn't give me any pictures, but they pretty much looked like the ultrasound pictures from a week and a half ago.

I also saw my OB today and they said they were comfortable delivering the triplets (I will have a c-section), but they don't see many triplets. Most are referred out to a specialist downtown. John and I have decided that although it will be harder to get downtown to Northwestern for my many appointments and tests, it will be the safest place for me and the triplets once they are born. We want them to have the best care and we feel Northwestern Hospital is the place to be. I need to get a referral for my insurance and plan on making an appointment in the next week or two.

Other than that, we were told I would be on bedrest at twenty weeks and most likely will spend some of that time in the hospital on bedrest. But it all depends on how the labor/lack of labor goes for me. We are in the process of finding a nanny for Jack this summer and will also need some help after the babies are born.

That's the update for now--more to come later.

Terrible Twos

As I was blogging last night, my two year old was really quiet. I should have known something was up. Here is how I found him...
He had found the lotion upstairs and wiped it on the wall, his hair and the wood floor. What a mess!! But how can you be mad at that face???

Here we go...

So, I decided to start this so someday I will have some memories for my children. I have been meaning to do this for a while, so here goes!

The big news around our house is the 3 new additions we will have in our family sometime late summer/early fall. That's right. I am pregnant with triplets. What a surprise! We found out I was pregnant late January. I went to my first prenatal appointment on Feb. 5 and had some labs drawn on Feb. 6. The nurse called me that afternoon and told me I had a high HCG level (14,000) which was great. I, of course thought something was wrong (i.e. molar pregnancy or twins). When I asked her this, she immediately told me not to "jump there yet." Two days later I had a second HCG drawn (almost 25,000) and again the nurse told me the number was fine and it was OK it had not doubled because it was so high to begin with. The doctor called me later on in the afternoon and told me we needed to do an ultrasound. He was thinking there may be twins. I was shocked as I told John this, but he was calm as usual. I had the ultrasound scheduled for Friday, Feb. 13th. I scanned the Internet all week looking at typical HCG readings of women who have a single gestation and those with twins. From my numbers, I decided I probably did have twins and began to prepare myself mentally for that news on Friday. On Friday, we got the shock that there were not two, but three! The ultrasound lady wasn't the nicest, but she finally let John come back into the room. We saw three sacs and three heartbeats. Thank goodness for John's calmness and support. The rest of the weekend was a blur of many different thoughts, research on the Internet, and prayers. I have since spoke with two other moms of triplets around here and gathered so much information on hospitals and NICUs and life with triplets. I have scheduled my first appointment with the maternal fetal medicine team next Tuesday. I began taking extra folic acid and will need extra iron. Other than that, I am feeling very tired and nauseous all day long. I'll keep you posted on my progress.

Here is the first picture of the babies. Two of them measured 6 weeks, one day and one measured 5 weeks, 4 days. Their heartbeats were in the 130s and 140s.
