Rome~Walking Tour~July 4th Part One

This morning, we walked to the Trevi Fountain to meet our tour guide, Fulvia.  On the way, we saw Castel Sant'Angelo, took some pictures by the Tiber River and stopped in another beautiful church, the Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola.  We met Fulvia at 9:30 am.  She took us on a three hour walking tour of Rome.  We went inside the Church of St. Ignatius of Loyola again, the Basilica of Saint Mary Above Minerva & the Pantheon.  We also saw several other attractions, including the Obelisk of Montecitorio, Palazzo Montecitorio & the Fountain of the Four Rivers.  After our tour ended, it was time for lunch. We walked around looking for somewhere to eat and found a farmer's market.  John and I sat down to eat outside at a restaurant near the market. We got gelato after lunch that was very good. Definitely better than ice cream in the USA.  Next we walked to the Roman Forum & the Colosseum.  It was a long walk on a hot summer day, but we did it.  We walked quite a few miles today!  After walking around the outside of the Colosseum, we walked to Case Romane del Celio.  This is a complex of ancient Roman houses underneath the Basilica of SS Giovanni e Paolo.  They were interesting to see.  When we were finished walking through the houses, we made the long walk back to Papa Vista.  On the way back, we made a quick stop at Savelli's religious store again. For dinner, we chose Hosteria Pizzeria "Da Vito e Dina" again since we liked it so much the first time.  Once again we had a great meal!  Grandmom, Ryann & I shared ravioli, caprese salad, and white wine.  We also had bread with our meal.  The caprese salad on top of the bread was delicious!  It was a great way to end our last full day in Rome.

Castel Sant'Angelo was originally commissioned by the Roman Emperor, Hadrian, as a mausoleum for himself and his family.  The building was later used by the popes as a fortress and castle, and is now a museum. The Castel was once the tallest building in Rome.
